NANDI MILLS
Nandi Mills is a Program Coordinator with the Democracy Security Project. Nandi developed a
passion to advocate for the full realization of human rights for all communities as she witnessed
racial and economic discrimination on numerous occasions.
Prior to joining the Democracy Security Project, Nandi served as an Equal Justice Works Fellow
at the Rebuild, Overcome, and Rise (ROAR) Center at the University of Maryland, Baltimore
advocating for historically marginalized BIPOC communities who survived violent crimes.
There, Nandi provided direct services to communities through legal research and writing. Nandi
also collaborated with community organizations, local government, and stakeholders through
outreach to create unified power. During her work, she saw how marginalized communities’
voices are often overlooked and undervalued in U.S. institutions. Nandi is committed to
amplifying these voices and providing resources that lead to actionable and sustainable social
change. She believes that empathy and compassion are essential components to furthering her
social justice efforts. Nandi has led advocacy efforts that addressed injustice across a wide
variety of issues including crime victim’s rights, immigrant’s rights, justice system reform, and
housing rights.
Previously in her career, Nandi interned with the United Nations Permanent Forum on People of
African Descent, where she assessed regional progress towards accomplishment of the United
Nations Sustainable Development Goals. There, she collaborated with United Nations treaty
bodies, key national, and regional contacts to address the implications of law and policy reform
efforts on marginalized communities.
Nandi attended Towson University for her undergraduate studies, where she majored in Political
Science and International Studies and obtained her Juris Doctor degree from American
University Washington College of Law. Nandi is deeply connected to her community and resides
in Maryland with her husband and dog.
